Preference of the Investors in Canvas: Önemsiyoruz

As part of the Middle East Technical University 2nd National Design Research Conference, we have participated the “Entrepreneurship for Design and Canvas Business Model Workshop” facilitated by Handan Temeltaş and Ayşegül Ataman Scharnin. The endeavors that are built by each individual with his/her designer identity are presented as Canvas Business Model that has an important place in the “Lean Startup” movement created by Alex Osterwalder and Eric Ries. At the end of the workshop, this time, each individual assumed the identity of investor and made symbolic investments.

This business model is built by filling under the nine components: Customer Segment, Value Proposition, Channels, Customer Relationship, Revenue Stream, Key Activities, Key Resources, Key Partners and Cost Structure and enables an end to end perspective. As Önemsiyoruz, we prepared this business model with Social Entrepreneur and Designer approach.
Once more, we saw what could be manifested, when the designer wants to use the innovation and problem solving skills in his/her soul in the interest of creating social benefit. We also saw the importance of sustainability. Moving away from the intuition of investors to make profits and to distribute profits to their shareholders, we called for using the profit for the benefit of society, not by making social responsibility campaigns but by investing in the social entrepreneurs.

Our approach as Önemsiyoruz for the components of Canvas Business Model was different from the entrepreneurs seeking for profits. Through our endeavor with no commercial customer, it is important to know each of the children groups who are in special circumstances and to discover their special needs with sensitivity as we grow our operations. We aim to combine our product development motivation driven by design discipline with the effort of creating an impact (pediatric development, social skills, education, fun) in the children’s lives with a toy and make our stakeholders and beneficiaries come together in a collective working environment.

In that respect, designers, non-governmental organizations, psychologists, sociologists, public and private institutions, students, mothers work together. In addition to the human resource required, the supply of the physical resources needed, sponsorships, donations, funds and for design as well as production, workshops will be organized.

The needs of each child group that we deal with will be checked regularly and the impact of our products will be measured. Fixed and variable cost calculations will be made. For the delivery of the products, strategy will be defined according to the child group in need. Public opinion will be created through news, publications.

Our Canvas Business Model, with the presentation we made as part of UTAK2016, became the second endeavor in which the symbolic investor participants invested the second highest in the workshop. We believe that investors, corporations will support entrepreneurs so that the products designed for social benefit could contribute to the life of someone else.
